The demand for herbal teas may seem to be a relatively new phenomenon, but in fact they have just as long a tradition as their traditional counterparts. The Chinese Emperor Chen Nung not only discovered Green Tea, but he is considered the father of Pharmacology. Three thousand years ago he analysed the effects of medicinal herbs leading directly to the popularity of today’s herbal infusions.
Rooibos (red bush) grows in South Africa and its needle-like leaves are fermented like tea. It is a traditional drink containing calming tannin, healthy proteins, calcium and trace elements but little theine. Flavouring further refines its aromatic flavour. Honeybush, another South African shrub, grows wild on the Cape. The fermented tea tastes as sweet as honey and it contains little tannin and no caffeine. There are many more traditional infusions including camomile, peppermint and lemon grass.
