Stinking Bishop - a very popular pungent soft cheese with a sticky orange rind that is washed in a pear perry made from Stinking Bishop pears as it matures. Made by Charles Martell in Dymock, Gloucestershire.
Despite it's name and smell, Stinking Bishop is actually a delicious and quite mild flavoured cheese. It is similar to French Epoisses, though not quite as strong and a little firmer in texture.
The Stinking Bishop pear was named after an infamous 19th century Ledbury farmer, Frederick Bishop, who was was known for his drunken bad temper and nicknamed Stinking Bishop. He is said to be buried in the churchyard of the Parish Church of Colwall, a village between Ledbury and Malvern.
